Map sampler by Sarah Ann Drayton 1805
Evidently, Sarah never completely finished her sampler (why not?) As a result, the unfinished part is perhaps the most interesting aspect of the sampler. There are drawings with pencil on the cloth. The linen was not printed. Who made these artistic drawings? Sarah herself, her teacher or someone else?
Most map samplers were made in Britain and date from the late eighteen century to the early nineteen century. Subjects were often the map of England-Wales and Scotland, sometimes Europe or the two hemispheres, but also Palestine or America. So far, we only ones found a map sampler of Holland. However, worked by an English girl!
