We were very sad to hear that on 31 august 2009, Mrs Bix Schipper died in Amsterdam at the age of 82. Mrs Schipper was unquestionable the most important researcher of Dutch samplers.
Her extensively written book, " Over Merklappen gesproken..." was first published in 1980. To write it, she traveled throughout Europe and the US to see all collections, private and public, bearing Dutch samplers. The book still contains a wealth of information. Along with the publication of the book, the Amsterdam Historic Museum held an exhibition on samplers which drew more than 30.000 people in two months.
Mrs Schipper wrote also numerous articles and small books on the subject of samplers and needlework. In the 1990's and until recent years, she committed herself to do research on a 17 th and 18 th century Amsterdam paper, looking for advertisements and articles that would mention anything on clothing and fabrics.
With hard but joyful work, Mrs Schipper has put the Dutch sampler on the map. Her knowledge and wisdom on many subjects more than samplers only will be greatly missed.
